This paper shows the information criteria (IC) performances in feature selection framework. Feature selection aims to select a representative subset among a wide set of features. We apply this approach to classify an hand segmented image. The performance is tested using various feature selection schemes (SFS, SBS, SFFS and SBFS) to select the candidate subsets. The accuracy of the approach is based on a good quality of the joint probability density approximation of the combined features. They are obtained using histogram optimized thanks to the adaptive arithmetic coding principles. Our approach is tested on different reference data. The subsets quality is evaluated using correct classification rate computed on multiple classifiers. Results show stability and convergence properties of this tool and its ability to select representative subsets (in the sense that the subset of feature is a good characterization of the classes in which the data belong). Information Criteria could be used for feature selection as a good alternative to other criteria.

This work proposes an original approach using mutual information and Pareto curve jointly for feature selection. Mutual information is used to estimate dependency criterion between features and classes and redundancy criterion between features taken two by two. Unlike some studies, these criteria are used simultaneously to compute Pareto curve and determine the optimal feature sets. This approach is tested on more reference data. Several clustering algorithms are used to compute classification accuracy. The obtained results show the importance of our tools and its ability to select the best feature sets that give the better description.

Résumé : En traitement d'image, avant toute exploitation de résultats d'une segmentation d'image, il est souvent nécessaire de réaliser une opération de fusion. Le but est de créer une partition formée de composantes connexes, modélisant les objets présents dans l'image. La segmentation initiale des images est souvent obtenue par l'exploitation d'attributs de bas-niveau (couleur, texture, forme...). La théorie Gestalt permet de prendre en compte des informations d'un niveau supérieur qui s'appuient sur l'organisation spatiale des objets et groupement d'objets initialement segment'es. Dans cet article, nous proposons une méthode de fusion de régions. L'originalité des travaux repose sur l'ajout d'un nouveau critère qui, associé aux critères Gestalt, permet de prendre en compte les objets jugés d'intérêt par le photographe, c'est-'a-dire les objets aux contours nets. Les régions associées aux objets d'intérêts seront alors préservées alors que les régions floues ou aux contours flous, situées dans l'arrière-plan, auront tendance 'a fusionner entre elles.

Résumé : Half-way between optimization and astronautic, this research study deals with satellites constel- lations design problems. In order to find the required number of satellites and to correctly set their position, such are the technical challenges of this thesis. To minimise the cost and reduce the time such are the economical challenges the space industries are confronted in a daily manner. The major difficulties of these problems are the size and the characteristics of the search space The irregularity of the criterions The mathematical and physical heterogeneity of parameters forbids the use of classical algorithms The evaluation of a solution, which uses a time consuming evalua- tion without returning pertinent information about the good or bad properties of the constellations, forbid a massive exploration of the search space. From this constatation and several preliminary studies a new approach is born. Based on a better use of the simulation and on a simplification of the criterions, the algorithm is composed of several levels and uses different optimization techniques it integrates a knowledge database on the orbits and a numerical optimization process both orchestrated by a metaheuristic algorithm. This new approach tries to bypass the main drawbacks of the field with a decomposition of the problem.
A mi-chemin entre l optimisation et l astronautique ce travail de recherche s attaque au problème du design de constellations de satellites Déterminer le nombre de satellites nécessaires pour ré- pondre à un besoin et les positionner de manière correcte tels sont les enjeux techniques de cette thèse Minimiser les coûts et les délais tels sont les enjeux économiques auxquels est confronté le domaine spatial au quotidien Les difficultés majeures de ce problème sont d une part la taille et les caractéristiques de l espace de recherche; D autre part la non-régularité des critères utilisés et la nature mathématique et phy- sique hétérogène de l ensemble des paramètres (paramètres entiers et paramètres réels) interdisant l utilisation d algorithmes classiques; Enfin l évaluation des solutions qui met en oeuvre une simu- lation coûteuse en temps et en calculs sans retourner d information pertinente sur les bonnes ou mauvaises propriétés de la constellation évaluée interdit une exploration massive de l espace de recherche De ces constatations et de diverses études préliminaires est née une nouvelle approche Basé sur une meilleure exploitation de la simulation et sur une simplification des critères utilisés l algorithme composé de plusieurs niveaux met en oeuvre plusieurs techniques d optimisation En intégrant une base de connaissance sur les orbites et une méthode numérique de recherche d optimum le tout or- chestré par un algorithme métaheuristique cette nouvelle approche tente de résoudre les difficultés intrinsèques au domaine d application en décomposant le problème.

The purpose of this article is to improve modeling of solar irradiance through the analysis of measurement data on the ground in the intertropical zone. For this, we identify, using information criteria, the probabilistic distributions introduced in two models of synthetic solar irradiance generation. We then validate the results by using the KL divergence and KSI parameter as comparison criteria between distributions arising from real and synthesized data. Our study confirms, for example, that the Gaussian classical distribution is not suitable for modeling solar irradiance, and we propose other more suitable statistical laws instead. The value of the identification procedure of the distribution laws presented in this article is that it ensures the production of solar irradiance data comparable in their statistical content to the measured data. Another advantage is that this procedure contributes to highlighting the time invariance of distribution laws representing the random terms. We conclude that this new information-criteria-based method permits the identification of the probability laws that best describe the statistical distributions introduced in models of synthetic solar irradiance generation.

In this paper we propose a hybrid approach using mutual information and multi-objective optimization for feature subset selection problem. The hybrid aspect is due to the sequence of a filter method and a wrapper method in order to take advantages of both. The filter method reduces the exploration space by keeping subsets having good internal properties and the wrapper method chooses among the remaining subsets with a classification performances criterion. In the filter step, the subsets are evaluated in a multi-objective way to ensure diversity within the subsets. The evaluation is based on the mutual information to estimate the dependency between features and classes and the redundancy between features within the same subset. We kept the non-dominated (Pareto optimal) subsets for the second step. In the wrapper step, the selection is made according to the stability of the subsets regarding classification performances during learning stage on a set of classifiers to avoid the specialization of the selected subsets for a given classifiers. The proposed hybrid approach is experimented on a variety of reference data sets and compared to the classical feature selection methods FSDD and mRMR. The resulting algorithm outperforms these algorithms and the computation complexity remains acceptable even if it increases with regards to these two fast selection methods.

Résumé : A standardized rapid inventory method providing information on both tree species diversity and aboveground carbon stocks in tropical forests will be an important tool for evaluating efforts to conserve biodiversity and to estimate the carbon emissions that result from deforestation and degradation (REDD). Herein, we contrast five common plot methods differing in shape, size, and effort requirements to estimate tree diversity and aboveground tree biomass (AGB). We simulated the methods across six Neotropical forest sites that represent a broad gradient in forest structure, tree species richness, and floristic composition, and we assessed the relative performance of methods by evaluating the bias and precision of their estimates of AGB and tree diversity. For a given sample of forest area, a several small' (<1ha) sampling strategy led to a smaller coefficient of variation (CV) in the estimate of AGB than a few large' one. The effort (person-days) required to achieve an accurate AGB estimate (<10% CV), however, was greater for the smallest plots (0.1ha) than for a compromise approach using 0.5ha modified Gentry plots, which proved to be the most efficient method to estimate AGB across all forest types. Gentry plots were also the most efficient at providing accurate estimates of tree diversity (<10% CV of Hill number). We recommend the use of the 0.5ha modified Gentry plot method in future rapid inventories, and we discuss a set of criteria that should inform any choice of inventory method.
